COMETS

The Comet captures the human imagination like no other heavenly phenomenon. Perhaps because they are so widely visible, and because they are such mysterious solar visitors.

We are seeking to collect the "Cream of the Crop". So if you have an image that does justice to the comet please send it along and we will publish it on this page.

Hale-Bopp 1997
Hurtling across space at more than 158,000 kilometers per hour, Hale-Bopp developed two visible ION tails and was about 137 million miles from earth on March 29, 1997. The white tail is dust particles illuminated by the sunlight and the blue is Carbon Monoxide coming from the comets head. Both tails are effects of solar winds. The head of the comet is approx. 25 miles across and the tails are approx 20 to 30 degrees long.
